When Nelson took over the company he initially carried on much of this work but then ventured into other fields, one of these being the supply of round timber to the veneer trade and furniture makers. At the same time the lower grade hardwood was sawn into chocks and supplied to the National Coal Board, who purchased vast quantities of hardwood at that time. The company progressed in this way for many years.
The company originally traded under the name of W. Prestwood & Son Ltd., specializing in home grown hardwoods since the 19th century. Nelson Jackson Butler purchased the company from Walter Prestwood in 1948 which, was engaged mainly in supplying the local farmers, builders and the general public.
As the company expanded, the premises close to the town centre became too small and it moved to a new site in Elmhirst Road in 1960. Paul, Nelson's son, joined the company about this time where it carried on in much the same way, adding to it’s product range the manufacture of pallet timber and made up pallets.
During the 1980’s and in to the early 90’s, when the high grade round timber markets contracted, a healthy demand for high grade seasoned and kilned hardwoods grew, along with fresh sawn hardwoods (mainly oak) for restoration and constructional purposes. We turned most of our capacity over to these markets, and this continues up to the present day with Paul and Carl (Paul's son) overseeing all aspects of the operation.
